This basically means that if you don't prepare yourself for something, then all you are doing is preparing to fail, because you haven't prepared in anything or succeeding in something. A time in my life when this might have been the case is when I used to play piano in elementary/middle school, and when I didn't completely practice or prepare my songs for my recital, I forgot part of my notes of the song and had to play what I remembered or just go on to the next part of the song. Because I didn't prepare for my recital, I basically was preparing to fail because I didn't try and practice as hard as I should have, which resulted in embarrassment and an awkward moment.
